Practical Advice For Increasing Fight Readiness

1. Train the techniques not only in the air, but also punch a bag or mitts, above all, and sometimes undergo a contact fight.

Protectors, food pads and competitors wearing gloves, this is the right equipment of fighters to train a full contact fighting:

2. Do not train strikes and kicks into a hard object. Human body is not a wall or a hard wood. It is enough to practice the techniques using a softer boxing bag or a medium hard mitts. Do not exaggerate strengthening with barbells as well. For keeping the fighting fitness, practicing with your own weight is sufficient, e.g. abdominal crunches, press-ups, pull-ups, knee bends and running.

3. It is necessary to adjust the joints, tendons and muscles to high performance without any previous warm-up. That is why it is suitable to train fighting without a warmer. It is also recommended to hang a boxing bag at home and immediately after waking up start punching it. The body then gets used to deliver kicks and strikes full-force not only with no previous warming-up, but even immediately after getting up.

If you are attacked at night in the street, you are not allowed to do some stretching or warm-up and only then start the defense. You are hardly allowed to please the attacker about a pause to do some stretching lasting twenty minutes. Your body must be able to fully strike and kick anytime.

4. One should not train too often, it is every day. The body needs a rest to regenerate. A short time training of punches to the bag and mitts, or a short-lasting fight once or twice a week is more effective then exhausting every day training of the techniques to the air.

5. Train contact fight not only in sporting clothes, but also in civilian ones, or in summer only in swimwear. People, who only train in kimono, have a subconscious link between the kimono and the physical performance, and wearing normal clothes they would not feel relaxed.

It is very useful to train in civilian clothes in the night streets and town parks:

night fight 1    night fight 3

night fight 2

(It is mostly better to fight at a distance off the opponent when in the darkness and use kicks, above all, because you do not have to notice a knife in his hands, for example, and it can be fatal for you.)

You should remember that when you are attacked, probably you would not wear a kimono but a civilian clothes.

6. Whether you train this or that martial art, above all the ones made of kicks and strikes, it is suitable - when a body-to-body fight - also a sufficient physical power usable when fight at a very close distance, most often when a hold by the opponent. It is very important to not only know how to punch but also know and can release oneself out of constriction. The physical power is stressed here because the technique itself must not be efficient enough when no sufficient power to perform it with. From this reason it is recommended to train regularly a short power-fight without kicks and strikes joined with training of releasing from holding by other person. And also to strengthen a bit - with one's own weight, above all. Such exercise can be applied as a warming-up before the martial art's training itself. Remember, that even a top karatist or kickoxer can be grasped and held, and therefore he has to be able to release his caught body or hand to be able to strike with it again.

7. To be able to use their physical potential, people should not be mentally blocked. It means that the practitioner must experience a real situation of jeopardy and a victory over somebody who really wanted to hurt him. No matter how good the training in the gym is, practical experience is always better.

8. Never let somebody hit you first. There are people who are talking to you and then punch you all of a sudden. Who is surprised and gets the first blow, he is more likely to lose. That is why keep a several meter distance from your potential opponent.

9. When you have a strong, dangerous and tough enemy, never finish with the first blow. After getting the one only punch, the rival can recover, get angry and attack you again and pull the fight his way. So punch him more times with the intention of knocking him out, so that he is disabled from the fight.

10. Never abuse your power. Never attack weaker people to only show to yourselves that you are stronger. Attack only those who want to hurt you. If you are attacked by a weaker person, only use your strength to put him off the attack on you, push him away or slightly strike him once, nothing else.
